The Power of Educational Space: How the Design of Classrooms Affects Students’ Performance

The British Council conducted a survey among teachers which revealed that the quality of students’ learning is significantly influenced by the environment surrounding them during classes, in particular the design of classrooms. Most parents do not pay much attention to this, because they do not know how much such a seemingly insignificant moment can improve the performance of their children.

Facts: design affects academic performance

Studies have shown that only 6 percent of parents cite the appearance of the classroom as one of the three most important things to consider when choosing a school for their children. In fact, problems such as unwillingness to learn, bad behavior, and social passivity can be partially or completely solved with good design.

In collaboration with the management of New Line Learning Academy in Kent, England, a project was undertaken to introduce a new design into the school’s renovated facilities. The purpose of the project was to create an interior that would bring students into closer contact with teachers and each other.

The results were immediate – after just a year and a half the attendance rate had risen from 50 percent to 90 percent. At the initiative of the college management, it was decided to equip all the educational facilities of this building.

The government, educators, and parents should embrace this method since it has been demonstrated that adults’ work productivity and output quality are improved by the appearance of their workplace; why shouldn’t children benefit in a similar fashion?

T. Goddard, director of the British Council, believes that financial investment in classroom design is not a luxury, but a necessary part of learning, a contribution to our children’s future. Let’s hope that we can apply this practice across the board, with the support of government, teachers, students, and parents. After all, the way to successful learning, where there is no place for truancy and antisocial behavior, has been found.

How to decorate a school student’s workplace: 7 ideas for for productive study

Are you looking for a workspace suitable for two and don’t want to worry about cleaning? We’ve got the perfect solution that offers privacy. Check out our selection of ideas now!

Health conscious

The ideal area for a school student’s desk is in front of a window. This way the surface gets the maximum amount of daylight and the child won’t have to put his hand in front of his notebook. Another obvious advantage: the more often a pupil will alternate between focusing on the near object – the notebook, and the far object – the street outside the window, the greater the benefit to his eyes, and therefore there is less chance to get eyesight problems.

Try to pick a table so that it starts as close to the window as possible. Or make a wide window sill at all and use it as a desk – a great solution for a small room.

For two

If there are children of about the same age in the family, it’s worth making a symmetrical space for two. Make sure that everyone has enough space as well as storage options. Often such workspaces are made completely the same to eliminate competition between the children. At the same time, you can sign drawers or shelves, put stickers on them or draw something together with the children to isolate everyone’s space.

For schoolchildren’s inspiration

For older schoolchildren, motivation plays a big role. You’ve probably noticed more than once yourself that it’s more pleasant and easier to work at beautiful furniture surrounded by interesting accessories. Help your teenager decorate his study space with something that will inspire him to put more effort into his studies: pictures of cities he dreams about, works by professional artists or photographers if he is a creative person.

For those who don’t like cleaning

The workplace of a schoolboy is constantly piling up a thousand necessary little things, piles of notebooks, books. Consider in advance a voluminous storage system: from capacious drawers, open or closed shelves, to containers and racks. The easier it will be for the child to arrange his belongings, the less nerves you and he will spend on keeping things in order.

For those who like to plan

The experts of writemypapers.me suggest that a designated area for student work can also help to develop planning skills. Planning skills play a big role in school performance. Teach your child this skill by organizing the space: have a big planner calendar where he can mark tests and other important dates, a slate wall or whiteboard, a place for post-it notes.

For privacy

It is very important to have the privacy to focus on your studies. Therefore, even in a small room it is worth arranging a compact workspace, but do not move the studies behind the dining table or sofa. Take a look at the shelving units, which will separate personal space, narrow desks, consider insulated balcony and arrange there a cabinet.

For individuality

Stores often offer to buy all the furniture for the nursery at once: bed, closet, chest of drawers, desk, chair and storage system. The set is often made in one color and usually in a single impersonal style. In a room like this, it is hard to create and treat it with love, because it does not leave you with the feeling of being a showroom in a store. Choose together with your child pieces of furniture from different collections, from different manufacturers, add bright accessories and at least some color.
